I created this animated explainer video during my time on the EU-funded SATURN project. This 2 minute animation explains the issue of underwater noise from shipping and some key solutions. A paper by SATURN researcher Charlotte Findlay (who provided the VoiceOver) and her colleagues at Aarhus University found that reducing vessel speeds even minor amounts can dramatically reduce the noise they emit. Their paper formed the catalyst for this video, and can be found (open access) at https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adf2987.

What is really exciting to me as a science communicator is the fact that — thanks to my colleague Eric Baudin at Bureau Veritas — I was able to add captions (on YouTube) in twenty-three languages, including Inuit! This is the most translations I’ve ever been able to include for any scicomm output I’ve created, which I am delighted by. I hope this helps make information about ways to reduce underwater noise more accessible around the world.
