Today's Ocean Soundscape

This infographic shows today's ocean soundscape, including the many sources of underwater noise in the marine environment.

Additional spot illustrations depict mitigation measures, including rerouting shipping lanes and using bubble curtains.

These illustrations were created within the Joint Framework for Ocean Noise in the Atlantic Seas (JONAS) project and in collaboration with the European Marine Board (EMB) for their Future Science Brief 7: Addressing Underwater Noise in Europe: Current State of Knowledge and Future Priorities. The infographic was also featured on the European Commission website about EU-wide limits for underwater noise.
